Beating Litterbox Odors

October 15, 2018

Cats are great little pets. They’re cute, cuddly, charismatic, and often quite hilarious. Fluffy is also very clean, and fairly self-sufficient. However, while it’s great that your pet will use a litterbox, her bathroom can get, well, pretty stinky. Read on as a local Newburgh, NY vet offers tips on defeating litterbox odors.

Cleaning

First and foremost, be sure to keep your kitty’s purrsonal powder room clean. We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter every week or so. You may want to experiment with litterboxes that make this a bit easier, such as stackable ‘sifting’ litterboxes.

Products

There are many types of cat litter to choose from, and some do work better than others. Just keep your pet’s opinion in mind. Some kitties are a bit fussy about their litter. Fluffy may have a specific preference.

Deodorizers

There is a wide variety of products that are made specifically for deodorizing litterboxes, such as powders, sprays, and liners. Any of these will help. You can also go the DIY route and just sprinkle some baking soda in the litterbox.

Plants

Plants not only help make your home look nice, they also filter the air. Put a few pet-safe plants near your cat’s litterbox.

Ventilation

Choosing the right spot for the litterbox is also important. Put Fluffy’s litterbox in a spot with good ventilation. If you keep it in a laundry room or a spare bathroom, keep the fan running in that room.

Air Purifiers

Air purifiers can definitely make a huge difference when it comes to defeating pet odors. Get a high-quality one, and remember to change the filter regularly. This will also help with dust and dander.

Air Fresheners

Since air fresheners are specifically made to combat foul smells, so it’s probably no surprise to find them on this list. Consider setting up a timed-release spray near your cat’s box. Just be sure to opt for products that break up scent particles. If you choose something that just masks odors with perfumes, the bad smells will quickly return.

Avoid Overcrowding

Did you know that cats don’t like sharing litterboxes? If you have more than one kitty, you’ll need a few litterboxes. We recommend getting one litterbox per cat, plus at least one extra.
