Thanksgiving Dog Petiquette

November 15, 2021

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Many of our canine patients will be enjoying special treats that day, and soaking up extra attention from visitors. Fido is a part of the family, and deserves to be included. However, it’s also important for your furry pal to put his best paw forward, and be polite and friendly with guests. A Hudson Valley, NY vet offers some advice on that below.

Greetings

Fido is a very adorable doorman, and he will definitely let you know when there is someone at the door. If your pooch tends to jump on people, or just gets agitated when people come over, keep him in his crate while guests are coming and going. You don’t want him knocking that apple pie out of your aunt’s hand!

Workout

Dogs are always calmer—and better behaved—after they’ve had a chance to burn off their zoomies. Before your guests arrive, take Fido out for a vigorous walk. A fun game of Fetch may also be in order.

Presentation

Fido often greets people at the door. It’s important for him to look–and smell–his best. Take time to give your canine companion a good bath beforehand. Claw trims are also important.

Sleepovers

Are your guests staying over? It’s probably a good idea to ask that they keep the guest room door closed. You don’t want Fido chewing their shoes!

Begging

Man’s Best Friend is a bit of a ham when it comes to food. Fido is very, very good at that sad expression that works so well on us. This isn’t just bad doggy manners: it can also be dangerous. You don’t want anyone giving your furry buddy something that isn’t safe for him! Keep your canine buddy in a different room or area during dinner.

Allergies

If some of your visitors have allergies, you’ll want to take a few extra steps with getting things ready. Vacuuming and dusting thoroughly is a must either way, but it’s crucial for those that dog fur doesn’t agree with. It’s also a good idea to change your air filter. Setting out extra tissues, and perhaps picking up some OTC allergy meds, is a thoughtful touch that may be very much appreciated. If possible, opt for hypoallergenic bedding and window treatments in your guest room.
