Poodle Day

October 1, 2022

Today, October 1st, is Poodle Day! These iconic dogs have very unique appearances, and make fun and lovable pets. A local vet discusses the Poodle below.

Beloved Underdog

Fido was initially met with some side-eye, but he became quite popular after winning Best In Show at Westminster. In fact, the Poodle was the most popular breed from 1960 to 1982, when the Cocker Spaniel knocked them off the top spot.

Unclear History

Some believe that the Poodle originated in Germany. Fido’s name seems to support this: the word ‘Pudel’ means ‘to splash’ in German. However, others think they are from France, where they were called the Caniche, or ‘duck dog.’ Other possibilities include Russia and Northwest Africa.

Early Job

Fido’s first job was retrieving fowl and spent arrows. Those tufts of fur on his legs helped him move through the water.

Three Sizes

There are three official types of Poodles; Standard, Miniature, and Toy. There is also a fourth type, Medium, but it’s not universally accepted.

Fido Used To Be In The Circus

Poodles were once very popular circus dogs! Fido learned many tricks, including walking tightropes, acting, and performing card tricks.

Allergy-Friendly

Poodles are often called hypoallergenic dogs. This isn’t technically correct, as they do shed and produce dander. However, their curly coats trap the dander, and their fur grows slowly, so people with allergies often find them easier to tolerate than other pups.

Grooming

Fido can wear a whopping 50 different hairstyles, including a form of doggy dreadlocks, which is called cording. If you take Fido to a salon, bring a picture of the cut you want, to avoid confusion.

Healthy Pups

Most Poodles live long, happy, healthy lives thanks to the efforts of dedicated, responsible breeders who routinely test all breeding stock. As with all breeds, however, some health issues can occur, including hip dysplasia and eye disorders.

Activity Level

Fido may very well have gotten his name from his love of jumping over puddles. Poodles are very active, and need lots of exercise and playtime.

They Love Swimming

Poodles usually love the water. This makes sense, as they were bred to retrieve game, he may be over the moon if you toss a stick or ball into a pond or pool for him. Just don’t leave him unattended near water.

Our Tips for Poodle Day in 2024

Why did the Poodle initially receive skepticism but later became popular?

Initially, Poodles faced skepticism due to their unique appearance and grooming styles, which contrasted with more traditional dog breeds. However, their intelligence, versatility, and success in dog shows, particularly after winning Best In Show at Westminster, boosted their popularity significantly.

What was the original job or purpose of Poodles?

Originally, poodles were bred for retrieving waterfowl and were adept at swimming and fetching. Their unique fur, often trimmed strategically, protected cold waters. This skill set highlights their strong swimming ability and keen retrieving instincts from their early days.

Why are Poodles often considered hypoallergenic, and how accurate is this label?

Poodles are often labeled hypoallergenic because their curly coats trap dander, and they shed less, reducing allergen spread. However, no dog is entirely hypoallergenic, as all dogs produce dander. Poodles are just more tolerable for allergy sufferers compared to many other breeds.

What are common health issues in Poodles?

Poodles usually enjoy good health but are susceptible to specific health problems. They often face issues like hip dysplasia, various eye conditions, including progressive retinal atrophy, and a range of skin disorders. Poodle owners must maintain regular vet check-ups and genetic testing if breeding.

Do Poodles enjoy swimming, and what precautions should be taken?

Poodles typically love swimming, a trait from their water retriever heritage. When swimming, ensure the water is safe and free from hazards. Always supervise them, especially in deep or moving water. After swimming, rinse off any chlorine or salt and dry their ears to prevent infections.
