Fido’s Golden Years

Is your canine companion starting to go grey around the muzzle? It can be a bit of a shock to realize that your pet is entering his golden years. While Fido may always be a puppy at heart, he’ll slow down as he grows older, and his needs will change a little. Read on as a local Hudson Valley, NY vet offers some tips on taking care of an older dog.

Food

Fido’s love of yummy treats probably won’t diminish much as he ages. However, because he won’t be as active as he once was, it will be very easy for him to pack on extra pounds. Offer your pooch a high-quality, senior formula dog food. Treats are fine, but don’t overdo it. If your furry friend becomes obese, he could face some very serious health issues! Ask your vet for nutritional advice.

Bedding

It’s always heartwarming to see an old dog snoozing peacefully in his bed! We recommend getting Fido an orthopedic doggy bed. The extra support will help him sleep more comfortably.

Activity

Although you don’t want to overexert your furry friend, you don’t want to let him become a couch potato, either. Most senior dogs need at least a daily walk, even if it’s just a slow stroll around the block. Ask your vet for more information.

Senior Comforts

Fido may become less mobile as he ages, and may find climbing and jumping more difficult. Get him some pet ramps or stairs to help him get around more easily. Elevated doggy dishes may also be beneficial.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend that Fido come in more often as he grows older. Regular exams are very important, as they can reveal developing medical issues before symptoms become obvious. It’s also important to keep up with your dog’s parasite control products and vaccinations. At home, watch for signs of illness, such as limping, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in appetite or behavior. Call your vet right away if you notice anything unusual.

Tail Wags

Older dogs often become super sweet and lovable, and just want to relax and collect belly rubs. Pay lots of attention to your furry best friend, and enjoy this special time with him!
