Maybe your pet is struggling with mobility issues or has been diagnosed with an orthopedic condition. Finding the right veterinarian with experience in orthopedics is crucial. At Stone Cottage Veterinary Hospital, we understand the importance of providing gentle, expert care with a board-certified orthopedic surgeon to help your pet find relief as they regain mobility.

about our clinic –
Big Island pet care center

Dr. Grune, a visionary in the field of veterinary medicine, founded our clinic in 1990. Opening his own practice was the realization of his lifelong dream—to deliver the highest level of care to animals in need.

Through his clinic, Dr. Grune has surpassed his expectations and provided comprehensive and compassionate care for dogs and cats throughout Hawaii. We prioritize client education and have created a comfortable space where pets and parents feel at ease.

Our lovely clinic is located within a retrofitted house. It exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The open-air lanai serves as our waiting room, and the surrounding landscaped grounds provide a serene environment to promote relaxation for your pet.

Our hands-on approach ensures that your furry friends receive personalized attention and care. We genuinely strive for the best for your pet and aim to build lasting relationships with both pets and their devoted owners. Our dedicated veterinarians and staff are here to meet all your pet healthcare needs.

A Safety-First Pathway to Recovery

At Stone Cottage Veterinary Hospital, we have established a surgical pathway for safe and efficient pet orthopedic surgery so cats can return to sauntering and dogs to fetching. We begin by thoroughly assessing your pet’s condition through an in-depth pet orthopedic consultation. Utilizing advanced digital X-ray equipment and conducting pre-anesthetic bloodwork, we comprehensively understand your pet’s health. This understanding allows our board-certified orthopedic surgeon to create a surgical plan that maximizes the chances of a successful outcome.

Proper recovery from pet orthopedic surgery is as critical as the procedure itself. Our veterinary team will walk you through the road to recovery, but some general tips are:

  • Confinement: Your pet must stay in a confined area such as a crate and should not be off-leash for three months after surgery.

  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy, including motion exercises, swimming, or other structured movement plans, is strongly recommended. Physical therapy may be necessary to enhance recovery depending on the orthopedic procedure performed.

  • Follow-Up X-rays: For TPLO and TTA procedures, follow-up X-rays are needed three and eight weeks after surgery to check how the bone incision is healing.

  • Recovery Time: Although your pet may start feeling better in three months, it’s important to remember that a full recovery can take anywhere from six months to a full year.
