about our clinic –
Big Island pet care center
Dr. Grune, a visionary in the field of veterinary medicine, founded our clinic in 1990. Opening his own practice was the realization of his lifelong dream—to deliver the highest level of care to animals in need.
Through his clinic, Dr. Grune has surpassed his expectations and provided comprehensive and compassionate care for dogs and cats throughout Hawaii. We prioritize client education and have created a comfortable space where pets and parents feel at ease.
Our lovely clinic is located within a retrofitted house. It exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The open-air lanai serves as our waiting room, and the surrounding landscaped grounds provide a serene environment to promote relaxation for your pet.
Our hands-on approach ensures that your furry friends receive personalized attention and care. We genuinely strive for the best for your pet and aim to build lasting relationships with both pets and their devoted owners. Our dedicated veterinarians and staff are here to meet all your pet healthcare needs.

Appointment Cancellation Policy
We require that you call at least 24 hours in advance to cancel a regular appointment, at least 48 hours for a specialist appointment, and at least 72 hours for surgeries due to high demand. To cancel your appointment, please call (845) 567-8740. If you do not reach the front desk, please leave a detailed message with your name, your pet’s name, and your phone number. If you do not cancel in accordance with these guidelines, your card on file will be charged accordingly with the amounts in our “Missed Appointment & Now Show” section.
Missed Appointment & No Show Policies
-
Missed Appointment: A charge of $70 will be applied should a client fail to show up for a scheduled general appointment without calling to cancel at least 24 hours prior to that appointment.
-
Appointment No-Show: A “no-show” is a client who misses an appointment without canceling it. A failure to be present at the time of a scheduled appointment will be recorded in the patient’s chart as a “no-show.” This includes arriving 10 minutes after your scheduled appointment. For a regular appointment, this will incur the $70 charge.
-
Specialist Appointment (Ultrasounds/ Echos): We require a $250 deposit to make the appointment with the sonographer/cardiologist as they come from an outside hospital. This deposit will go towards the final cost of the service. We require a 48-hour notice to cancel or reschedule. Otherwise, the deposit will be non-refundable.
-
Surgery Appointment: We require a $100 deposit on all surgical and dental procedures scheduled with our hospital veterinarians and a $500 deposit to hold surgical appointments with the traveling surgeon as they travel from an outside hospital. This deposit will go towards the final cost of the service. We require a 72-hour notice to cancel or reschedule. Otherwise, the deposit will be non-refundable. If your pet is scheduled for surgery or a dental procedure on a Monday, you must let us know by the previous Friday.
Technician Visits Policy
Technician visits require a $24.00 service charge. Our Veterinary Technicians are licensed professionals with college degrees in veterinary technology, and they take their time to ensure your pet gets the best care possible.
Prescription Policy
We understand that there are many reasons that our clients may want to purchase medications from online retailers or outside pharmacies instead of directly from us. To assist you in making the most informed decision for your pet, we want to be very clear that we recommend that you purchase products only from an appropriately accredited and certified veterinary pharmacy. However, if you choose to procure medications from another source, we want to give you that option.
Stone Cottage Veterinary Hospital WILL NOT process orders for medications, preventatives, and special diets sent directly to us (via phone or fax) from online suppliers or outside pharmacies (with the exception of compounding pharmacies for a specific formulation).
We absolutely support our client’s choice to choose where they obtain their pet’s medications and are happy to accommodate a request to do so. Clients who opt to receive their pet’s medication through these avenues will simply need to pick up a written prescription at our hospital during regular business hours. This paper script will be prepared at the client’s request for a processing fee of $10, which can be paid to the hospital at the time of pick-up. This fee will be waived for controlled substances.
You can read our reasoning for the above in our full prescription policy.
